Stars takes taxi rides in WRC VW Polo
Going drifting around Monaco GP circuit
Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen: World’s fastest hosts
MONTE CARLO, Monaco – Nobility, sport personalities, actors, TV ‘faces’, top international stars, to mark the start of the Monte Carlo rally and the 2016 World Rally series, took the seat next to VW’s WRC drivers for rides around this city and its Grand Prix circuit in a Polo R WRC.
The idea was to publicise the 2013, 2014 and 2015 World championship-winning car by showing the driving skills of Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen.
Among the VIP passengers were actor Mikael Nyqvist (Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” trilogy); Pierre Casiraghi (Monaco’s royal family); German former footballer Thomas Helmer; Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki; European Footballer of the Year 1991 Jean-Pierre Papin; Finland’s most-capped footballer Jari Litmanen; French rugby star Damien Chouly; Allan McNish, ex-Formula 1 driver and three-times overall winner of the Le Mans 24-Hour.
Nyqvist said after his ride with Sébastien Ogier: “Wow! That was a real adrenalin rush. I once sat next to Pierce Brosnan in a car during filming but Seb really knows what he’s doing!”
CEREMONIAL START FOR RALLY 2016 SERIES
Wozniacki enjoyed a swift city tour with the three-times champion: “I live here in Monaco but this fast taxi ride was a great new experience. I felt really safe.”
The ceremonial start of the rally – and of the 2016 World Rally championship season – also welcomed German TV presenter Kai Pflaume, dancer Katrina Patchett and the world’s fastest race-walker Yohann Diniz.
VW will defend all three WRC titles – Manufacturer, Driver and Co-Driver – for the third time in a row.
