SEVEN-SEATER FOR THE BIGGER FAMILY: Suzuki’S Ertiga has been updated for 2016 with external and internal changes that include better folding seats. Image: Suzuki Motors
Suzuki Auto SA has squeezed more specification into its revitalised seven-seater Ertiga which is already in showrooms across South Africa.
“This family car,” the automaker says, “has proven popular with its surprisingly large cabin, four-year service plan, 1.4-litre petrol engine and exemplary road manners”. It comes from the Maruti factory in India but is based on the Suzuki Swift – models which Suzuki prefers to refer to as ‘lifestyle utility vehicles’ – and has been given a modest body re-style with a bold new grille and front bumper.
GL models received chomed highlights on their headlights, grille and front and rear bumpers. Other GL details include new wheel covers and body-colour external powered mirrors but most changes are in the cabin, starting with “a marked improvement to the quality and feel of the upholstery and door panels”.
When the Ertiga reached SA in June 2014 it came with a fair list of standard ‘features’ – immobiliser, aircon. electric power-steering, two crash bags, anti-lock brakes and emergency braking assistance. Added for 2016 are the GL’s audio system, in response to feedback from earlier Ertiga owners; it also has Bluetooth, MP3, USB and iPod connections – ergo, hands-free phone calls.
The GL also has an anti-theft alarm, rake-adjustable steering column, power windows, rear parking radar, a second 12V socket for the middle-rear seats and a third-row bench that can now fold 50/50 instead of as a unit.
Suzuki has also approved a tow-rating of 550kg.
The Ertiga, Suzuki says, is a true seven-seater which can change into a load volume of 736 litres if the two rear seat rows are folded flat; the second row will slide fore/aft for easier access to the third row. Sales and marketing boss Andre Venter added: “The Ertiga has attracted a loyal and passionate following. With the new model we have increased the its functionality and appeal so look forward to even more families joining the Suzuki brand.”
The cars’ 1.4-litre, fuel-injected engine makes 70kW at 6000rpm and 130Nm at 4000rpm for delivery to the front wheels through a five-speed manual or four-speed auto gearbox (see prices below). Claimed ‘combined’ fuel consumption is 6.6 litres/100km
Ertiga 1.4 GA – R176 900
Ertiga 1.4 GL – R202 900
Ertiga 1.4 GL a/t – R218 900 – each with a four-year or 60 000 km service plan and three-year or 100 000km warranty.
The former range topping GLX model has been discontinued.
