Four models have been added to Ford’s Focus one-litre Ecoboost range, each for the first time available with a PowerShift six-speed dual-clutch auto transmission or a six-speed manual box.

The PowerShift/EcoBoost combination is available in Ambiente and Trend specification in either a four-door sedan or hatch shell to raise the total number of Focus models available in South Africa to 14.

And before you start pooh-poohing with “…but it’s only a three-cylinder one-litre” think on: the petrol turbo engine puts out 92kW and 170Nm of torque. Is that sudden silence we hear at The Corner? Right then… oh, and it won the International Engine of the Year title for an unprecedented three consecutive years (2012-14) and the under one-litre category for the past four years.

Of course if that’s not enough grunt go look at the hotter two-litre ST1 and ST3 range-toppers with their considerable price premium.

‘REMARKABLE FUEL-ECONOMY, PERFORMANCE’

Tracey Delate, Ford SA’s general marketing manager, told The Corner: “The Focus is a stand-out model that showcases our unsurpassed design, technology, safety, performance and value-for-money in the extremely competitive C-segment.

“The expanded line-up combines the remarkable performance and fuel economy of the 1.0 EcoBoost engine with the outstanding responsiveness and driving dynamics of the high-tech dual-clutch PowerShift auto transmission. Ambiente and Trend specs make the cars more accessible than ever.

“The Focus 1.0 EcoBoost Ambiente offers particularly exceptional value for private, corporate and fleet buyers.”

The six-speed dual-clutch auto, Ford says, “ensures seamless power delivery and rapid shifts with the efficiency, optimised gear ratios and driving enjoyment of a manual box – or the smoothness and ease-of-use of a conventional auto”.

SIX-SPEAKER AUTO – AND OTHER EXTRA GOODIES

It comes with auto stop/start, a fuel-saving grille shutter and Ford’s Smart Regenerative Charging which selectively engages the alternator and charges the battery when the vehicle is coasting or braking to recapture energy that would otherwise be lost – reducing engine load and so reducing fuel burn.

With the PowerShift auto Ford has recorded a combined-cycle fuel consumption of 5.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 125g/km – but bear in mind that that’s under test conditions. If you buy, regard it as a target… who knows?

Even ‘entry’ models have remote-control central-locking (careful, now, with that!), powered front windows and external mirrors, front and side crash bags, electric power-assisted steering, a trip-data computer and aircon.

There’s also a six-speaker audio system, 10.7cm info screen, Ford SYNC with Bluetooth and voice control, two USB ports, an auxiliary socket and two 12V power sockets.

Do something silly on the road and you’ll have the back-up of anti-lock brakes with electronic pressure distribution and emergency pressure assistance, electronic stability and traction control and (if you haven’t really got to grips with a clutch) hill-start assistance.

STILL A ONE-LITRE SCEPTIC? TRY THE 1.5…

Trend models add 16″ dual-spoke alloy rims, front fog lights, cruise control with speed limiter, rear power windows, curtain crash bags and power-operated child-proof rear door locks.

The Focus Trend is also available with a 1.5 EcoBoost engine that makes 132kW/240Nm and a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed auto/manual gearbox.

Personalisation is possible, variously through a Styling Pack on the five-door Trend which adds 17″ alloy rims, a rear spoiler, privacy glass, auto and adaptive bi-xenon HID headlights with diode daytime lights, dual-zone auto aircon and heating elements in the external mirrors.

A “driver assistance pack” for the Trend will add self-correcting lane-departure warning, parking (parallel or perpendicular) assistance and a rear camera with front and rear parking radar.
