- Going seriously off-road? This is just for you…
- BMW Motorrad kit can even chop trees
- DIY repairs promised for faraway places
MUNICH, Germany – All motorcycle adventurers are familiar with the potential challenges: a slip-up in the bush can put your bike out of action, even if it is a BMW, and the nearest mechanic could be hundreds of kilometres away and there’s no phone signal.
Normally, the long-planned motorcycle adventure would be over.
Because of the constantly growing desire for adventure among BMW GS riders BMW Motorrad assembled a group of experienced GS guys to look into the issue. And so created a special new tool for the R1200 GS and R1200 GS Adventure which will be able to handle repairs and replication of spare parts out in the field.
It’s called the BMW GS Survival Tool – a sort of specialised Leatherman or Swiss Army Knife…
POSSIBLE WAY TO AVOID THE ULTIMATE HOLIDAY SPOILER
It was developed based on the so-called axe-hammer pliers used by mechanics in Bavaria back in the early 20th century and, like that role model, has unique multifunctions – axe, hammer, pliers, knife, screwdriver, saw – and was refined and perfected through endurance tests by BMW engineers in some of the world’s most remote regions.
Many a fantastic motorcycling adventure would have been halted had it not been for the multitool.
The product’s final test was during the 2016 International GS Trophy South East Asia from February 26 to March 5 2016 in Thailand. The tool showed its capabilities on a number of occasions – though only for hammering in tent pegs and opening bottles and cans. Despite the extreme conditions, there was no need for spare parts to be replicated for the motorcycles.
THREE VERSIONS – HOW DEEP IS YOUR POCKET?
The BMW GS Survival Tool is forged from high-quality chrome molybdenum steel though to save weight the shaft is aluminium and plastic. Alternatively, there are all-titanium and titanium/carbon fibre versions (prices below).
You’ll have to ask your local BMW Motorrad franchise for more details and availability – but these are the German prices (including 19% German VAT). Do your own math…
- BMW GS Survival Tool: €389
- BMW GS Survival Tool Pro: €1479
- BMW GS Survival Tool HP: €1699
