LONDON, England – This is the “latest, most focused, fastest and exhilarating opn-top McLaren yet built” but only 500 will be assembled and all have been sold or ordered so the best The Corner can do is tell you what you’ve missed…
The 675LT Spider was, the automaker says, revealed at the end of 2015 as the latest chapter in the history of the Longtail name and was the fifth new model debuted “during a defining year for McLaren Automotive”.
It’s only the second model to wear the LT badge and arrived less than a year after the first model in nearly 20 years resurrected the name and was in response to significant customer demand – the 675LT Coupé which focused on lightness, enhanced aerodynamics, increased power and track-focused capability and also sold out before the first deliveries commenced.
The new 675LT Spider, McLaren says, has remained true to the spirit of its iconic predecessor with aerodynamically optimised styling that results in 40% more downforce than the 650S Spider which it sits alongside in the McLaren Super Series.
Mike Flewitt, McLaren Automotive’s chief executive officer, told The Corner in a media release: “The Longtail is a famous name in McLarenhistory. It was first used on the fastest version of the iconic McLaren F1. The McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ was the final highly successful iteration of the F1. The 675LT is the purest distillation of what McLaren stands for – pure driving pleasure.”

Whatever… McLaren says the main focus of the 675LT Spider is to deliver maximum performance, engagement and excitement. “To achieve this, weight has been cut by 100kg with more carbon fibre and lighter components throughout and suspension geometry from the McLaren P1 and a heavily-revised 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 from the Coupé with power and torque unchanged, with 496kW at 7100rpm and 700Nm from 5000-6500rpm.”
More than half of the powertrain components have been replaced – among them the turbos, cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds, connecting rods, a camshaft the fuel system.
Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes 2.9sec, 200km/h arrives at 8.1sec – 0.2sec slower than the more aerodynamic and lighter Coupé. Torque delivery in first gear is managed to 600Nm for the best acceleration by preventing wheelspin.
Top speed is 326km/h – yet despite this performance data McClaren claims hese blistering performance figures, the 675LT Spider returns 8.52 litres/100km on the EU combined cycle. A three-piece folding hard top can be opened at up to 40km/h.
The car makes extensive use of carbon fibre bodywork: front bumper with larger splitter and end plates, front underbody, skirts, side intakes, lower side intakes, rear bodysids, lower, rear fenders, rear deck, rear bumper and diffuser – all contributing to a dry weight of 1270kg – 100kw less than the 650S Spider.
The 675LT Spider shares the suspension and suspension geometry of the Coupé, the front sitting on stiffer springs and a wider 20mm wider track. Spring rates are the most track-focused of the Super Series models, increased 27% front and 63% rear, providing a more rearward balance and allowing 40% downforce.
Standard on the car are 10-spoked forged alloy rims – 19″ front, 20″ rear – and model-specific Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres – the lightest wheel/tyre combinaton yet offered by McLaren. Options are a new 20-spoke design in liquid metal or diamond-cut finishes and the five-spoked design first fitted to the 675LT Coupé.
The lightness-of-being continues through the cabin with Alcantara and carbon-fibre. The two light carbon fibre-shelled racing seats, clad in embossed leather, together save 15kg, and feature ‘675LT’ embossed leather to provide enhanced levels of support and grip. Heating/ventilation and audio controls are in the portrait-orientated central touchscreen – there is no aircon (that’s a no-cost option.
