MUNICH, Germany – BMW has expanded the model range of its i3 compact hybrid car with significantly increased battery capacity promising a potential 300km in ideal conditions.
The original model was capable of 190km and will continue to be sold. The new one, even in everyday use in bad weather and with the aircon or heating on, BMW says, will still be capable of 200km on a fully charged battery.
Current owners of the original car can have the new battery retro-fitted for the same range benefit.
DON’T WORRY, STILL THE EXTRA ENGINE
BMW says the driving performance figures for the 125kW hybrid synchronous electric motor remain virtually unchanged. The motor propels the BMW i3 to 100km/h in 7.3sec, making it the sportiest and most efficient electric vehicle in its segment.
The original BMW i3, on the global market for two years now (May 2016), remains part of the model range. In addition, both models will be available with a range-extending two-cylinder intended to maintain the charge level of the battery while driving and add 150km to the i3’s range.
SWOP OLD FOR NEW
“This,” BMW says, “broadens the model range of the best-selling premium electric vehicle in its segment worldwide to four versions and can supply new and more powerful charging stations for home garages as well as new equipment options.
“Customers can have their first-generation i3 fitted with the new battery.”
