TURIN, Italy – The all-new FIAT Tipo hatchback and wagon have been launched to the media in Turin with bold claims of “exceptional roominess, high specification, robust quality and outstanding efficiency”.
Fiat says the cars are “deceptively roomy” and capable of accommodating three 1.8m+ adults in the rear – “thanks to class-leading legroom and outstanding headroom within its 4.37m long, 1.79m wide and 1.50m tall dimensions”.
Boot capacity claims to be best-in-class at 440 litres – the wagon adding 110 litres and also class-leading) and the extra 20cm (to 4.57m) of body length will allow a load length of 1.8m with the split rear seats folded.
Loading the wagon is aided by a low sill and configurable components such as an adjustable load floor and removable side storage panels. The roller luggage cover can be removed with one hand and stored under the floor..
There are also a number of cabin nooks to fit a range of objects and bottles and a charging-capable USB port. Both the hatch and wagon will be offered in three trim levels – the badging not yet available.
However, the entry stuff includes aircon, remote central locking, front power windows, body-coloured external mirrors with power adjustment, six crash bags, digital radio, chromed door releases, USB and Bluetooth connectivity with steering-wheel remote control.
The wagon adds power to the rear windows and roof rails.
Key options for the entry version (at least in the UK) include front fog lights, tinted rear glass, rear power windows, 16″ alloy wheel rims, parking radar and a Uconnect touchscreen system with satnav.
Mid-range trim includes the touchscreen, leather-trimmed steering-wheel and gearshifter, rear power windows, LED daytime running lights, the 16″ rims, front fog lights, parking radar and cruise control for the equivalent of another R20 000.
Or you can add options that include a satnav upgrade, reversing camera and two “safety pack” options that variously include speed limiter, auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control.
The top trim level builds in a more comprehensive satnav, 17″ rims, auto lights-on, the reversing camera and leather upholstery.
The UK range offers a choice of five engines:
1.4-litre 16v producing 50kW and 127Nm.
1.4 T-Jet turbo petrol with 90kW and 206Nm.
1.6-litre e-TorQ producing 82kW and 152Nm (with a six-speed, auto transmission).
1.3-litre MultiJet II turbo producing 72kW and 200Nm.
1.6-litre MultiJet II turbo 90kW and 320Nm.
The latest Tipo was designed in Italy by the FIAT Style Centre, developed in Turkey with Tofaş R&D – one of Fiat Chrysler’s largest research and development centres – and will be assembled in Turkey.
The cars will be in UK showrooms in September 2016.
