BMW has been active in Italy for 50 years so is celebrating the anniversary in that country with the production of the BMW i8 Futurism Edition – a colourful car indeed.
That’s it above in all its gory glory, courtesy of BMW Italy and customising house Garage Italia.
The media conference for the presentation was BMW Milan with Sergio Solero, president and CEO of BMW Italy, and Lapo Elkann, president and Founder of Garage Italia Customs. The Corner, sadly, was not there but we have the details anyway.
The original ‘Lampada ad Arco’ hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York
“The Edition,” Solero told us in a media release, “combines the icon of future mobility (the i8 is high-performance battery-powered sports car)with the Italian art of Giacomo Balla.
“It will run in the Mille Miglia 2016 following the BMW 328 driven by Sergio me.”
“Lampada ad Arco”, the work of Giacomo Balla, is replicated on the car. The original painting hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and represents a street lamp powered by electricity under moonlight.
“The revolutionary colour technique,” BMW says, “and the advent of electricity in the 1900’s are strictly linked to the future technology of the BMW i8.”
The automaker says BMW i stands for visionary vehicle concepts and technologies and connected mobility services, as well as a new understanding of ‘premium’ that is strongly defined by sustainability.
BMW i is represented in 50 countries with the BMW i3 (electric car for metropolitan areas) and the BMW i8 (plug-in-hybrid sports car) available in South Afrixca.
Since its launch a couple of years ago the BMW i8 has become the world’s best-selling hybrid sports car and, BMW says, “represents an icon of future mobility”
Elkann told the conference: “There was immediate synergy with BMW Italiy the very first time we met for the i8 Futurism Edition project. Garage Italia Customs and the BMW brand share all the values connected to technology evolution and the continuous search for innovation in their specific sectors.
“The BMW i8 Futurism Edition is a practice of style. It gave the GIC’s maestros a chance to celebrate a car projected towards the future of mobility. It also honours Italian art with Balla, a prominent figure of the Futurism movement.”
Solero again: “The BMW i8 Futurism Edition represents the pairing of a sports car with Italian creativity and art. The initiative is a perfect fit with the cultural programme which celebrates our 50 years in Italy.”
