Fiat’s Fullback bakkie (named, Fiat SA tells us, for the rugby or American football position) has arrived in South Africa in three models, three trim levels and with a choice of one petrol or two diesel engines.

(We just thought we’d mention here that the field position is also used in football, netball and other sporting codes too…)

It has a ladder-frame chassis, is rated as a one-tonner+, and a wide range of local and imported personalisation accessories is available. There’s a choice of five-speed manual or five-speed auto gearbox (the latter coming soon) on the diesels, five-speed manual only on the petrol model.

The petrol engine is a 2.4-litre capable of 97kW; the 2.5 diesel 100kW or 131kW according to the buyer’s choice – which also involves rear or all-wheel drive.

The single-cab – the working-man’s version of the Professional ) 2.4 petrol 4×2 still comes with power windows, manual aircon, power door locks, 16″ steel wheel rims, cloth upholstery and anti-lock brakes. The load bin is rubberised.

The double-cab 2.5 Diesel 100kW 4×2 LX comes with a lockable rear axle, leather upholstery, cruise control, power windows front and rear, manual aircon, driver and frontg passenger crash bags, anti-lock brakes, central locking, keyless entry (remote), steering-wheel audio controls, 17″ alloy wheel rims, towball and rubberised load bin.
