Bye-bye M5: Super model will say farewell

MUNICH, Germany – As the current version of BMW’s M5 magic muscle-car heads into run-out so the German automaker has created a limited edition to mark to occasion.

Only 200 Competition Edition units will be assembled but they’ll have power/torque increased to 441kW/700Nm to join the most powerful automobiles in the model history of BMW.

The cars will have only an M dual-clutch transmission which will help them to a (claimed) devastating 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds and, the automaker says, “a distinctive personalised look”. Take a look at the images, you decide…

The engine is the standard 4.4‑litre twin-turboV8 unit but retuned to make the extra 29kW and 20Nm.

“The increase in power,” BMW says, “harmonises perfectly with the Competition Package, which is supplied as standard to enhance the car’s handling even further.”

What does that include, then?

BMW lists a one-centimetre lower chassis, firmer springs and shock-absorbers and stabilisers. The car’s “active” M differential settings have been amended to handle the extra power and the steering system has been made more direct.

“As a result,” BMW says, “the Competition Edition guarantees typical M driving dynamics at the highest level both in everyday traffic and on the racetrack, especially when combined with the optional M carbon-ceramic brake system.”

Only two colours are available – 100 each in black or white metallic – and the 20” forged and polished, typically double-spoked, black alloy wheel rims, the automaker adds, underscore the car’s outstanding handling characteristics.

The rims are shod with 265/35 ZR rubber up front, 295/30 ZR at the rear; the body carries carbon M Performance parts – rear diffuser, the gurney on the boot lid, mirror caps – and the gloss black kidney and side gills bear the lettering ”M5 Competition”.

BLACK LEATHER, WHITE STITCHING

In the cabin are carbon trim strips bearing the logo “M5 Competition 1/200”. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the number 1 would alter for each car though The Corner assumes so.

Upholstery is “black Merino leather” (also not clear, does that mean sheep skin?) with white stitching. The car’s mats have the same colour scheme.

Other comfort highlights include a 1200W Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system, head-up display, lane-departure warning or the BMW driving assistant and heatable front seats.

The BMW M5 “Competition Edition” will sell in Europe from 129 500 Euros (R2 055 811 as of July 26, 2016, guide only).
