They’re doing it again! Jaguar has re-affirmed its commitment to three more years, from 2017, of sponsorship for the Simola Hillclimb.

Richard Gouverneur, MD of Jaguar Land Rover for South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa told The Corner in a media release: “The Simola Hillclimb has been incredibly successful for us and we have so much more we want to achieve.

“Over the next three years we will move closer to our vision of making this the must-attend racing event on the South African calendar.”

The event has seen remarkable growth since Jaguar came on board as the headline sponsor in 2014. Attendance has reached record numbers – the three-day 2016 event attracted 14 206 spectators along the 1.9km road course.

A media release added: “Event logistics and infrastructure have evolved to cater for larger crowds and to give spectators an unforgettable experience that will have them return year after year.

“Demand for event entries has started to exceed supply so the organisers had to re-think the entry system. A new mechanism was implemented for 2016 to give every competitor a fair chance at participating.

“That, in effect, turned the event into an invitational but organisers still received 201 applications of interest for the 145 places – a record number and up 46% on 2013.”

Jaguar says the level of competition caused tense final moments during the King Of The Hill shoot-out. Historic cars, sports cars, supercars, single-seaters and purpose-built hill-climb race cars all feature with some of South Africa’s most famous drivers.

Ian Shrosbree, MD of Knysna Speed Festival, said: “We’re delighted that Jaguar has extended its partnership Thanks to it the event has transcended from a motorsport gathering into a social and lifestyle highlight.

“Jaguar shares our vision and over the next three years we’ll continue to build it into an internationally recognised and in-demand motorsport lifestyle event.”

The 2017 Simola Hillclimb will start with the Classic Car Friday town parade and charity golf day on May 4. Racing will start with Classic Car Friday the following day and King of the Hill competitors will join a parade and display.

The main event will start on the morning of Saturday May 5 and continue until the afternoon of Sunday May 6.

The competitor entry process will go live in October 2016.
