- SUV-inspired hatch for entry segment
- 18cm ground clearance, SUV-styling
- Features unprecedented in its segment
Renault’s new contender in the small hatch segment has just been launched in South Africa at prices that should make the opposition’s eyes water.
The “SUV-inspired” KWID hatchback is available in Renault showrooms now in Expression and more-expensive Dynamique variants.
Renault SA says the car is the entry-level model in its vehicle portfolio and exceed established entry segment design cues with “a modern and welcoming interior, generous cabin space and features not usually seen in the price segment.
David Durand, head of KWID styling at Renault, told The Corner is a media release: “The KWID is an entirely new car which offers a lot of surprises, inside and out, among them features from the next segment up.
“It has a modern and intuitive interior – technologies that not only meet drivers’ needs but also make driving simpler and safer.”
Hmmm, let’s see then…
For starters, the Dynamique has has a MediaNav navigation/multimedia system displaying through an 18cm touchscreen and radio and Bluetooth connectivity in its piano-black/chrome centre console.
Both models in the small range, Renault says, have SUV styling and construction over a high stance (18cm ground clearance, claimed to be more than any competitor) and a 2.42m wheelbase and 300 litres of boot volume.
The automaker describes the seating as “spacious” for five people.
Both KWID SCe models have a three-cylinder 999cc ‘Smart Control efficiency’ (SCe) engine capable of 50kW at 5500rpm and 91Nm at 4250rpm driving a five-speed manual gearbox. Renault claims 4.71 litres/100km from the 28-litre fuel tank.
‘TOUGH AND ROBUST’
“With the KWID,” Renault says, “has come a considerable step in designing a new breed of vehicle in the growing small-car segment.”
Laurens van den Acker, a senior designer, added: “Its lines exude a tough and robust character and underpin its distinctive modern look.”
The bold grille highlights Renault’s trademark diamond logo, its C-shaped headlights the brand’s new lighting signature ahead of black-clad flared wheel arches.
At the rear, the lower part of the bumper comes with black trim – another SUV cue, Renault says – “and the body-coloured roof spoiler adds to the car’s dynamic stance”.
Instrumentation is digital.
Make the most of weekends and enjoy KWID’s smart, trendy interior together with class-leading space that comfortably seats five and complements a host of additional and thoughtful features.
The steering has electric power-assistance, the windows have powered lifts, aircon is there. An open storage space faces the front passenger, litre-bottle moulding exist both sides. (warranty, prices, below image)
Like all Renault products, the KWID Dynamique and Expression are delivered with a five-year or 150 000km mechanical warranty and a six-year anti-rust though warranty.
A dealer service is required every 15 000km. Service plans are available.
