- VW compact gets new cabin/exterior designs
- Up! Beats coming first-quarter 2017
- Four models of the cute four-seater
UITENHAGE, Eastern Cape – Volkswagen’s compact car, the Up!, now has “sharper lines, sporty design”, new colours, new wheels, additional features and has been launched in South Africa to add to the more than 4800 which, VW says, have been sold in South Africa since its market introduction in February 2015.
So what’s changed?
Well, the headlights have been reshaped to accommodate diode daytime running lights, the front bumper has been changed and the bonnet made “more contoured to give it a sharper, sportier look”
The choice of new wheels goes up to 16″, the rear light-clusters have been amended and a rear diffuser added.
The cabin facia has a printed surface created, VW says, through an “in-mould-labelling process”, and new ambient cabin lighting “underlines the exclusive look of the interior”.
Leather-wrap is on the multi-function steering-wheel and gear-shifter on some models.
PARKING? NO PROBLEM…
The three-cylinder, one-litre, engine has been retained and still makes 55kW at 6200rpm and 95Nm at 3000rpm (though VW says 90% of max torque is on call from 2000-6000rpm.
Good news is that the car’s possible top speed is 173km/h and possible fuel-consumption 4.6 litres/100km – not so good is that it takes 13.5sec to reach 100km/h.
Parking in a scrunched-up high-rise garage slot shouldn’t be a problem, even for the worst driver: the car is only 3.6m long, 1.64m wide and 1.5m tall. VW is proud that it is the smallest four-seater on the market but will fit four adults.#
There are four models, each with the silly two-letter name and even sillier prefixs of which I have already made fun in an article I wrote after the car’s launch in Gemany in September 2011: Take Up!, Move Up!, Up! Beats and Cross Up!.
More seriously, they each come with anti-lock brakes, four crash bags and electronic stability control. Cross Up! and Beats Up! (named for VW’s BeatsAudio sond system) will be available in South Africa in the first quarter of 2017.
Somehow VW has managed to cram the 300W system -amplifier, six high-end speakers and a sub-woofer into the minicar for “a concert-hall feeling” while driving. The car also makes music with unique 15″ alloy wheel rims, Beats decals and contrasting external mirrors.
Good connection. The infotainment system on board the New Up! (whoops, got carried away there) new Up! has been completely redesigned. Standard in Take Up! is a 7.9cm Composition screen with a monochrome display, radio/CD, SD card and auxiliary socket.
PHONE SHOWS THE ROUTES
From the Move Up!, er, up, is a Composition phone with 5-13cm colour display, radio, USB, SD card and auxiliary socket, and Bluetooth. A smartphone with a ‘Maps + More’ app can be integrated with the infotainment system the phone’s screen displaying the routes.
Each Up! can be perked up with a number of factory-fitted extra-cost items such as 15″ alloy wheel rims, Sound “Plus” with four front speakers and two rear, driver package (cruise control, rear parking radar and a multi-function display), winter package (heatable seats and front fog lights), roof package (black roof and external mirrors), smartphone integration with satnave, and a sunroof.
The minicars will be available in eight colours, two whites, blue, red, three shades of metallic, and black pearlescent.
