GOTHENBURG, Sweden – The arrival of the new Lexus LC coupe is, the automaker says, “a significant illustration of Lexus’ dedication to creating cars with exciting, design and exhilarating performance”.

No argument there from The Corner – Lexus has been acknowledged as making the best cars in the world; through the previous three decades, Lexus says, its products have transformed the world’s luxury-car market.

The LC500 will make its South African debut mid-2017 with detailed product spec information closer to the time. Meantime, read on for more information…

Lexus says it’s building on established strengths to explore opportunities in design and technology to reshape its model range.

“The change is being led by Akio Toyoda,” the company told The Corner, “who, in taking on the roles of chief branding officer and master driver, has given the business more autonomy and the confidence to be daring.

NEW 2+2 FLAGSHIP

“With the benefit of dedicated resources, greater flexibility and quicker decision-making, Lexus has delivered a succession of vibrant new models that are changing the way it is perceived by its buyers and the global automotive industry.”

Lexus has taken its LF-LC concept into production less than five years after its unveiling and that, its said, “called for new methods of co-operation between the design and engineering teams”.

“The LC is a new flagship 2+2 luxury coupe for Lexus’ global model range,” the carbuilder says. “It not only showcases the qualities of design, beauty, engineering and advanced technology that define it as a premium vehicle manufacturer but also symbolises its ambition as a luxury lifestyle brand.”

The LC’s exterior design is immediately recognisable as being a masterful re-interpretation of the styling of the LF-LC and LF-CC concepts, winner of an ‘Eyes-On Design’ award when first revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The car has kept the LF-LC’s low roof while ensuring a sports suspension and 21″ forged alloy wheel rims could be accommodated – the bonnet shading a five-litre V8 petrol engine capable of 351kW and a new close-ratio, direct-shift, 10-speed auto transmission – claimed to be a first for a premium car.

BUILT WITH LFA SUPERCAR

The package rides on a completely new GA-L (Global Architecture – Luxury) platform, designed for future generations of front-engine/rear-wheel drive Lexus models.

The LC will be assembled at Lexus’ Motomachi plant, home also to the hand-crafted LFA supercar. Lexus says the plant’s layout and its facilities were tailored to the production of the LC.
