- Limited number, latest Kadjar model
- High-value accessories pack, 17″ alloy rims
- Renault Kadjar XP Limited Edition
THE KADJAR XP Limited Edition SUV has just (Feb 2017) become the latest model in Renault SA’s sport utility range with features from three leading vehicle segments – SUV, hatch and sportwagon.
The South African wing of the international automaker says the car is meant to deliver the best overall driving package in its segment. “The embodiment of all of Renault’s DNA is in a crossover, inside and outside. Our new design language speaks volumes across the model range.”
Renault SA launched three Kadjar models in April 2016, each with a turbo engine: diesel 96kW Dynamique 1.6 dCi 4×4, petrol 96kW Dynamique 96kW and Expression 96kW. Three months later came the Kadjar Dynamique 4×2 with Renault’s 85kW 1.5 dCi turbodiesel engine.
Now comes the Kadjar XP 96kW Limited Edition 1.2 turbopetrol with a six-speed manual transmission and based on the Expression derivative but been taken to the next level to encourage drivers to “get out there and experience all the XP (it stands for Experience Points, as in computer gaming) action and adventure that life has to offer them”.
The XP has a R40 000 “accessory pack” comprising 17″ alloy rims, cornering fog lights, a swan-neck tow hitch, side steps and a roof rack.
Laurens van den Acker, Renault’s design director, told The Corner: “With its sporty, muscled design, the Kadjar brings a breath of fresh air and excitement to the world of crossovers. It’s a stylish, fun, SUV for young families and adventure.”
The XP Limited Edition also has a new lighting identity – C-shaped diode daytime running lights and the shell’s length, width, wheelbase and ground clearance , the automaker claims, “exceed those of competitors”.
Other rough-road attributes include 200mm ground clearance, a roof-mounted spoiler, injection-moulded plastic bumpers and black plastic front and rear scrape plates. Prettying features include chromed window weather strips and body-coloured door releases.
The driving seat is adjustable and height/reach adjustment exists for the electric power steering. From double top-stitching to facia chromed finishes, Renault says, “the environment is stylish and refined”.
The Kadjar has 370 litres of boot space; more stuff can go into a total of 30 litres among the doors, glove box, central armrest and seat-back pockets. Comfort features include a front central armrest, height-adjustable front and three height-adjustable rear head restraints, 60/40-split folding rear bench, manual aircon, boot light, four speakers, power front and rear window-lifts and rear reading lights.
Instrumentation uses a 19cm TFT colour digital panel with variable information displays. The instrument cluster shows fuel level, engine temperature via diode gauges whose colours can be swopped.
The steering-wheel has remote audio controls, Bluetooth offers safer hands-free telephony and audio streaming from external devices. Radio controls, MP3 CD player, (USB and AUX ports) have controls alongside the steering column; there are 12V sockets front and rear and phone voice control is on the steering wheel.
Smart tech includes cruise control (standard on Kadjar units) and cornering foul-weather lights.
F1 TECH PART OF THE PACKAGE
The 1.2 turbopetrol engine makes 96kW at 5500rpm / 205Nm a 2000rpm, figures comparable to bigger non-turbo units. Renault points out: “It’s lively, responds immediately, and has the efficient and advanced technologies derived from Renault’s Formula 1 expertise.”
F1 tech? Yep, it brings:
- Thermo-management for running at low temperatures
- Diamond-like carbon coating of engine components to reduce friction
- Kinetic energy recovery while braking and decelerating
- Intelligent management of the air-fuel mixture
- Stop/start system to benefit fuel efficiency
Combined, Renault claims, that all contributes to making 5.7 litres/100km possible.
Safety and control items include anti-lock brakes with emergency pressure assistance, electronic stability control, three seconds of gradient start nurse, six crash bags (driver, front passenger, side and curtain), pre-tensioning seat belts, anti-whiplash head restraints front and rear), reinforced sub-frame and two rear IsoFix child seat anchors.
