MARANELLO, Italy – Ferrari will use the upcoming 2017 Geneva auto show to launch its 12-cylinder 812 Superfast, said to be the most powerful and fastest Ferrari in the brand’s history.
The V12 series marked the official start of the Prancing Horse story in 1947, 70 years ago this year (2017). And, for you folk who like comparisons, assuming the roads were straight, unlimited and empty between Johannesburg and Cape Town and timing through home to airport, wait for flight, flight disembarking and luggage collection, and totalling to hotel, flight and drive would take approximately the same time.
The car’s top speed is listed as “more than 340km/h”. Do the math…
“The 812 Superfast,” Ferrari says, “is for buyers who want the most powerful and exclusive Ferrari. It’s an uncompromising sport car that will deliver exhilarating driving on road or track yet be comfortable enough to use as an all-round experience.”
The new 6.5-litre V12 engine is capable of 588kW at 8500rpm – a figure, Ferrari says, that no other front-engined production car has ever come close to delivering “and which ensures the kind of thrilling top-end performance that is the exclusive characteristic of Ferrari’s noble V12 heritage”.
Maximum torque is 718Nm at 7000rpm with 80% chiming in at 3500.
The engine’s performance levels was reached with 350 bar direct-injection system used for the first time on a high-performance engine and pairing it with variable geometry intake tracts derived from those of non-turbo F1 engines.
The dual-clutch transmission has gear ratios which, combined with shift times, sharpen throttle response still further.
“The shell design by the Ferrari Styling Centre,” Ferrari told The Corner in a media release , redefines the formal language of a front-engined V12 Ferrari while underlining exceptional performance with very sporty lines and proportions.”
In silhouette, Ferrari adds, the 812 Superfast has a fastback sleekness. “It’s a two-box design with a high tail reminiscent of the 365 GTB4 of 1969. The flanks visually shorten the tail and are characterised by impressively muscular wheel arches which imbue the 812 Superfast with the power warranted by its imposing V12.
“Diode headlights integrated into the air intakes on the bonnet also emphasise that front muscle, integrating with, and wrapping around, the front wheel-arches.
“Four round tail lights inspired by Ferrari tradition emphasise a design crafted around horizontal lines and give the 812 Superfast a broad, imposing stance, visually lowering both spoiler and cabin.”
The launch car in the images is finished in a special new colour, Rosso Settanta (Seventy), to mark the company’s 70th anniversary.

As with each Ferrari, the automaker says, style and aerodynamic function were integrated to produce innovative solutions and forms; “Two examples are the multi-functional frontal section, which incorporates a cluster of aerodynamic solutions that includes movable flaps at the front of the underbody and the rear flank which has an unprecedented aerodynamic by-pass to increase downforce.”
The cabin is said to have a sportier, more radical, look with the main elements apparently floating – “an effect of thoroughbred racing eagerness and lean elegance” – with “more sporty and ergonomic seats”, new steering-wheel and instrument clusters and the latest infotainment and aircon.
