PRETORIA, Gauteng – Ford’s Transit Connect van, a name that’s been around since the 1960’s, has been fitted with a new and surprisingly powerful  1.5-litre TDCi engine.

The spacious delivery vehicle has an International Van of the Year title under its beltline and, Ford SA says, has high level of standard features, great fuel economy and versatile load space.

“Now,” Ford adds, “it’s more capable than ever before.”

Tracey Delate, Ford’s marketing manager for Africa south of the Sahara Desert, told The Corner in a media release: “The introduction of the1.5 TDCi is part of the roll-out of this engine across our model range. It replaces the 1.6 TDC but brings benefits in terms of performance, fuel-consumption and running costs.”

SMALLER ENGINE, MORE POWER

Customers have access to a range of options though only a long-wheelbase chassis is available.

The new turbo direct-injection 1.5 TDCi diesel, despite having a slightly smaller engine displacement, is up from 85 to 88kW and maximum torque is 270Nm driving a six-speed manual transmission.

The 3.6 cubic metre cargo hold has full-width steel bulkhead between it and the cabin; a load-through hatch and window with a dual passenger seat instead of a three-seater bench is a free option. Maximum load is 1000kg.

Access is through side-hinged rear doors and a kerbside slider.

Standard with the Transit Connect’s Ambiente spec are anti-lock disc  brakes, stability control, hill-start aid, emergency braking pressure and rollover mitigation. The driver gets a crash bag, one for the passenger is an option.
