- Limited convertible celebrates six decades
- SA on export list – but move quickly
- Full luxury spec, choice of three engines
MILAN, Italy – Fiat is launching a special edition 500 convertible to mark the 60th anniversary of “this iconic global bestseller” and South Africa is included among the countries in which the car will be available.
Deliveries will start on July 4. Whether that date will apply to South Africa remains to be seen but, whatever, the special edition, Fiat says, will have a grey fabric folding roof and Dolcevita bi-colour paintwork which combines tri-coat white for the body and pastel ivory for the bonnet and pillars.
“Chromed mirror covers and special 16″ alloy wheel rims with a white diamond finish,” Fiat adds, “pay homage to the styling cues of the original 500 and the cars will be badged with vintage Fiat logos and a 500-60th icon with the red ‘6’ and ‘0’ incorporated into the last two figures of the 500 logo.”
The cabins will have a vinyl facia and vintage Fiat logo-clad steering-wheel to complement the retro-inspired ivory leather seats complete with piping, ivory leather gear-shifter, special mats and 500-60th kick plates.
TOUCHSCREEN AND SATNAV
Fiat points out that while the finishes recall those of the original 500 its technology remains is right up-to-date with a multi-function steering-wheel, 19cm high-definition Uconnect Radio Live touchscreen with Bluetooth, satnav, USB and AUX ports, rain and dusk sensors, cruise control, automatic aircon, foul-weather lights, and rear parking radar.
“Bringing the 500-60th bang-up-to-date,” Fiat adds, “are as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. They enable access to smartphone applications through the touchscreen in the centre.”
The 500-60th will be available – in European markets, at least – with a choice of three petrol engines: 1.2-litre 52kW and 900cc 65kW TwinAir hooked to either a manual or Dualogic gearbox, and an 80kW version of the 900cc TwinAir.
More than six-million Fiat 500 units have been sold through the past 60 years – the 600-60th will only be in limited numbers. The first 60 will be individually numbered so here in South Africa we’d suggest you get your order in soonest. For instance, only 250 will go to the UK.
The 500-60th is seen as part of the Fiat 500’s 60th anniversary celebrations, “Forever Young”, which will celebrate Fiat 500 models through the six decades.
Fiat fans (or anybody else, for that matter!) can get involved by taking an online tour of the era in which the 500 was born and look back at “500-mania”, art and advertising that helped to shape auto icon.
