- Century on – and finally a Fiat SUV
- SA in queue for supply – think fourth quarter
- New engines, all-wheel drive units for SA
ROME, Italy – Alfa Romeo showrooms in Europe have opened their order books for the brand’s first SUV, a Stelvio model with a 132kW 2.2 diesel engine, eight-speed auto transmission and rear-wheel drive.
All wheel drive will come later.
South Africa? Yes, it will come, but towards the end of 2017. A spokesperson for FiatChrysler SA told The Corner: “We hope to launch the Stelvio in the fourth quarter though haven’t finalised models – most likely will be the 147kW two-litre petrol with the 206kW version later on.
“We are also hoping to have the 2.2 diesel but, whichever, each will be all-wheel drive – though a two-wheel drive version will be investigated if they make financial sense.”
He added that trim would be the same as the Alfa Giula models – base, Super and Stile or similar. “The tòp of the range QV will be on the cards but only in 2018.”
‘SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE, LOTS OF FUN’
Pricing, he added, “will be competitive…”
Meanwhile, in Europe, the diesel RWD will lead the charge with, Fiat says, “superior performance, loads of fun and a thrilling drive while paying homage to the most authentic traditions of Alfa Romeo”.
The Italian media release send to The Corner added: “This version fits perfectly into the Stelvio family and is designed to give sporty driving purists an adrenalin-packed experience, typical of rear-wheel drive, without forfeiting fuel efficiency – 4.7 litres/100km is possible.”
The Stelvio engines, Fiat says, have the FiatChrysler group’s best engine design,a new generation of diesel and petrol all-aluminium four-cylinder units assembled in Italy.
This Stelvio is the first sport utility vehicle in Alfa Romeo’s more than 100-year history.
LATEST INJECTION SYSTEM
The two new engines extend the Stelvio range though all models have the option of all-wheel drive.
Along with the engines, the Stelvio SUV launch will bring new interior styles to the Stelvio range: “a luxurious chocolate interior colour and the sporty interior which includes aluminium inserts, black lining, leather steering-wheel and heatable leather sports seats with six-way front power bolster and driver memory”.
The 2.2 diesel unit uses the latest MultiJet II injection system and an electric turbocharge with a speed sensor. The car is capable of 210km/h and 0-100km/h in 7.6sec.
The aluminium turbopetrol engine is a four-cylinder capable of 330Nm at 1750rpm, 215km/h and 0-100km/h in 7.2sec.
