- Jaguar F-Type gains four-cylinder turbo Ingenium engine

PRETORIA, Gauteng – Jaguar has widened the appeal of its F-Type range with a four-cylinder Ingenium turbopetrol engine capable of 221kW/400Nm, 100km/h in 5.7sec, and 249km/h.
“The car,” Jaguar SA says, “is an an all-aluminium two-seat sports car with enhanced agility and improved efficiency and affordability – a true F-Type with its own character.”

Maximum torque arrives at only 1500rpm and delivers its thrust through an eight-speed Quickshift transmission; the engine, in fact, generates the most specific power of any F-Type – 110kW/litre. It’s also siad to be the most efficient, scoring 16% less fuel burn than the 250kW V6.
‘F-TYPE MORE ACCESSIBLE’
Ian Hoban, vehicle line director for the F-Type, told The Corner in a media release: “This advanced four-cylinder engine has created a vehicle with a distinct character. Performance from an engine of this size is remarkable yet balanced by improved fuel-efficiency and price.
“It makes the F-Type experience more accessible than ever.”
The exhaust manifold, Jaguar explains, is part of the cylinder-head casting, which in turn contains ducts for coolant flow to reduce warm-up time. The engine is fed by a twin-scroll turbocharger (it has ceramic ball-bearings) whose turbine responds very quickly to deliver boost pressure almost instantly – result: almost no turbo lag.
All Ingenium engines have been designed and developed in-house and are assembled at Jaguar Land Rover’s R17-billion (Apl 2017) engine plant alongside the 147kW and 184kW four-cylinder petrol engines and the 110, 120, 132 and 177kW four-cylinder diesels.
The Ingenium in the new model is mostly over the front wheels – part of why, the automaker says, the car is so agile.
SPECIAL EXHAUST NOTE
“Meticulous chassis tuning to complement the new engine,” Jaguar says, “delivers even better steering response, body control and ride comfort.”
Erol Mustafa, chief product engineer for Jaguar Sports Cars, explained: “Most of the weight reduction was over the front axle so the car is beautifully balanced and really agile – really at home on twisty roads.
“Couple that with a four-cylinder exhaust note and this F-Type has a character all of its own – it’s the feisty younger brother of the V6 and V8.”
The 2018 F-Types have redesigned bumpers. “Diode headlights enhance their design,” Jaguar says, “and greatly differentiate each model.”
Light 18″ wheel rims, it’s said, not only help to identify this latest Jaguar but also help to minimise unsprung mass.”
‘SILHOUETTE REALLY IMPORTANT’
Changes to the cabin include light “slimline” seats, a Touch Pro infotainment system and chromed and aluminium trim finishes.
Ian Callum, Jaguar’s now almost fabled design director, told The Corner: “Retaining the silhouette of the F-Type across the range was really important. This (the new model) is a true Jaguar sports car, a true F-Type – we didn’t want to dilute the design DNA.”
The new F-Type range has more driver assistance systems than earlier models, helped by having sophisticated forward-facing stereo camera. Callum explained: “These systems, which help to improve safety and reduce the driver’s workload, include, lane-drift warning couple with lane-keeping, road-sign recognition, adaptive speed control – and watch the driver’s reactions.”
The two-litre Ingenium engine will arrive in South Africa in the last quarter of 2017, when prices will be published.
