KNYSNA, South Africa – South Africa’s most spectacular annual motorsport extravaganza will be rolling this weekend (May 4-8) in the hills above this coastal resort town on South Africa’s Garden Route.
Three glorious days of up-close motorsport with cars old and new racing in the now globally famous 1.9km Simola Hillclimb competition sponsored by automaker Jaguar – which will be putting its money where its corporate mouth is with entries of its own.
Scrutineering will be on Thursday (May 4), Classic Car Friday will have 64 entries covering 58 years of motoring and motor racing and some iconic brands on track.
The main event, King of the Hill, will run over Saturday and Sunday, the 84-car entry list including purpose-built hill-climbers with 1000kW+ engines, specialised and very light single-seaters, exotic supercars and classy road cars.
Three King of the Hill titles and a Jody trophy will be waiting on the podium for the drivers who will include some of South Africa’s most famous motorsport names along with a strong contingent of international competitors.
Simola is also, however, regarded as very much a family event so included over the weekend will be parades and exhibitions, Gasoline Alley stalls and displays, helicopter flips from the Simola Golf and Country Estate, and a huge menu of food and beverages.

Martin’s most famous success was at the 1984 Daytona 24Hour with an all-South African team that included rally and track ace Sarel van der Merwe and driver Graham Duxbury. They dominated that event in the now revered Kreepy Krauly-sponsored March 83G-Porsche.

Fans can join the Live Stream broadcast directly from their smart phone, tablet, laptop, personal computer or even on a smart TV. All that’s required is an internet connection.
Cameras at six strategic points on the track and recorded interviews and inserts will keep viewers abreast of the action each day and prize-giving on Friday and Sunday.

Martin also raced in Formula Atlantic and won the South African Drivers’ championship in 1980. He finished on the podium from 1977-83 and still competes in local and international historic racing.
“I’m honoured to be Grand Marshal,” he told The Corner in a media release. “Simola is an especially exciting event with a spectacular gathering of cars and drivers.”
A Hillclimb Shuttle will operate each day (R25pp) and taxis will leave/return from/to Knysna High School (map) playing-field parking from 8am Friday and 7.30am Saturday and Sunday.
At passengers will be dropped/collected at the main Knysna Mara gate, the main spectator parking area for self-drivers, or the Pits Lane gate. Shuttles will ferry spectators up the course from the Pits Entrance to the Mara Entrance throughout the event
A VIP Shuttle for Le Mans VIP tickets will run from the Knysna Angling Club.
A handful of lucky visitors to the 2017 Jaguar Simola Hillclimb will win an experience of a lifetime, a ride in a Jaguar up the 1.9km course.
