JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – The recent shooting on the freeway that serves OR Tambo International Airport shocked many people but none more than those driving close to where it happened.
Has it occurred to you what you might have done had you been in the close vicinity when gunshots erupted? MasterDrive’s MD Eugene Herbert believes one thing clear in the video of the attack recorded by a motorist is that many people were paralysed by shock and fear.
“When confronted with a situation such as this,, he said “panic is inevitable, a normal human reaction.
“Which is why it’s important to be prepared for such an event. If one has a plan of what to do if caught in crossfire from a hijacking or other shooting some logic might counter the fear.
“Though we will never really know how we will react in a crisis mental preparation chances are you will react automatically to protect yourself.”
SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
First, take cover.
“This could be behind a pillar or behind your car,” Herbert said. “Movie producers will have us believe a shot can cause your car to explode – reality is that it’s almost impossible.
“While seeking cover use the opportunity to call emergency services – make a point today of putting in or making sure such numbers are easily accessible on you cellphone.
“Once safe, try to help any victims. If, like the airport area shooting, the incident is in the road remember that many people will be to flee – put safety first. Don’t just run into the road, cars might drive around the injured to escape; some drivers might go against the traffic.
“The objective is to minimise injury or death.”
FIND OUT WHAT TO DO
Nevertheless, one can never be truly prepared for something such as the dreadful event on that Johannesburg freeway.
