- Two models, two engines – TDI to come
- Fast roof, lots of options for both
- Fit a B&O sound system – top-down auditorium
AN AUDI A5 Cabriolet has been added the A5 Coupe and Sportback sisters in South Africa and fitted with a new six-cylinder 260kW/500Nm turbo engine.
It’s based on the coupe version though the rear window is flatter, the front/rear overhangs are shorter and the bonnet has a power dome.
The car is mid-sized at 4.673m, 47mm longer than its predecessor, and rides on a 14mm longer wheelbase; the seats are more compact to add legroom front and rear. Front shoulder room is up by 26mm, rear kneeroom by 18mm.
It’s all covered (or, of course, not!) by a powered folding hood that, Audi says, “delivers outstanding aeroacoustics thanks to effective insulation”. It opens in 15sec, closes in 18sec, and will operate at up to 50km/h – a sudden shower isn’t going to halt the rush-hour traffic.
…AND UNDER THE BONNET
Soft-top fans will appreciate the car’s torsional stiffness being 40%greater than its predecessor to, Audi says, make it the stiffest in its class; the 2017 model is up to 40kg lighter, depending on model, than before.
Adaptive shock-absorbers are an option to give the driver the choice a dynamic or comfortable ride. ‘Dynamic’ steering is another option – it varies its gearing ratio according to speed and steering angle.
Most potential buyers will, whatever be more interest in what’s under the bonnet: there’s a choice of 140kW TFSI or 185kW two-litre turbo FSI. The former will only be offered with front-wheel drive, the latter only with permanent all-wheel drive.
Each will be offered in Base or Sport trim. If you don’t mind waiting, a two-litre turbo diesel will come along eventually – Audi did not specify when.
Also available will by a higher-performance S5 Cabriolet with a three-litre engine capable of 260kW, 15kW more than its predecessor. The apparently important and now very hoary concept of the 0-100km/h launch needs 5.1sec; top speed is 250km/h.
Both, we believe, should be dropped and replaced with more important data. Mainly because our Editor has been typing the same thing with varying numerals for more than 30 years.
Each model has varying standard equipment though options can be orderdc individually or combine “Parking” and/or “City” assistance packages.
Playing a central role, however is adaptive cruise control with engine stop/go which, we presume, will handle a now well-established across brands stop/go follow-my-leader control in commuter traffic or more conventional high-speed freeway cruising.
The driver can choose from five following distances and adjust acceleration and system response.
Standard is Audi Pre-sense City – it monitors the road at up to 85km/h to identify other vehicles and pedestrians and brake hard in an emergency. Attention Assist monitors the driver the warn of fading attention to the road.
The A5 Cabriolet is now offered for the first time Audi’s virtual cockpit, a 31cm TFT display with a resolution of 1440×540 pixels. It forms, with MMI Navigation Plus and its 21cm monitor, a central information unit.
The whole MMI control logic is similar to that of a smartphone, including voice control and a wi-fi hotspot for up to eight devices; it also loves Google Earth Navigation and Google Street View.
A Bang & Olufsen sound system is an extra-expense option.
The boot lid can be opened with the key fob or a cabin button to access 380 litres of stuff space if the roof is in place; 320 litres if retracted. The boot can also be opened by waving a foot around under the rear bumper.
Other options include massage seats diode headlights and dynamic turn signals front and rear.
New trim lines on the A5/S5 Cabriolet, Audi says, provide a number of cabin and exterior customisation opportunities – then there’s the ‘sport ‘line which offers additional equipment to enhance the sporty look of the vehicle.
An S Line sport package is available for sophisticated customisation, particularly for the interior, and there’s an S Line package for a particularly dynamic exterior appearance.
