- Two versions now, more later in 2018
- Latest design ‘expressive and unique’
- Go green – carpeting made from recycled stuff
JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – The XC40, Volvo’s first premium compact SUV, is now available in South Africa direct from winning the 2018 European Car of the Year and revving to join the Volvo XC90, S90 and V90 Cross Country.
”The new car,” Volvo says in a media communication, ”brings a breath of fresh Swedish air to the premium compact SUV segment and scorns the rule book to create a new motoring experience in which individual style meets a functional and supremely minimalistic driving environment.”
Guess you’ll have to take a test drive to confirm that to you satisfaction…
Anyway, the automaker says the evolution of Volvo’s latest design language has resulted in ”an expressive and unique exterior” while the cabin has inherited all of Volvo’s latest design elements – among them a 21cm Sensus Connect touch screen and digital instrument cluster.
New design elements, among them an optional contrasting black or white roof, white mirror-caps and wheel rims and red or ‘Lava’ carpeting made from 100% recycled materials, ”will allow XC40 customers to express a more individualistic style”.
Functional additions include a removable rubbish bin, a cubby-hole hook, smartphone storage with inductive charging, and a multi-adaptable boot floor.
There are two trim levels for now – ”sporty” R-Design and ”elegant” Momentum – two engines (D4 diesel or T5 petrol), and all-wheel drive on each.
Range-topping Inscription units will arrive later in 2018 along with a T3 front-wheel drive version.

The XC40 has introduced in Europe a Care by Volvo” subscription model through which people can subscribe to a car rather than buy it with a fixed monthly fee which includes service, maintenance, insurance and other benefits.
It’s under consideration for possible mid-2019 introduction to South Africa.
Greg Maruszewski, Volvo Car SA’s MD, told The Corner in a media release: ”This car is perfect for South Africa – luxurious, capable, compact, and priced competitively.”
He also claimed the XC40 has a higher level of standard specification than any competitors.
