LONDON, England – Jaguar Land Rover will reveal an “intelligent and connected” steering-wheel of the future at an inaugural Tech Fest at the Central St Martins art, design and technology college in London.

“The Sayer steering-wheel concept,” the automaker explained in a media release ahead of the September 7-10 2017 event, “would live in its owner’s home and becomes a trusted companion.”

It will be featured on a new Jaguar future vision concept called the Jaguar Future-Type intended to explore post-2040 mobility.

The Sayer – “a beautifully sculpted piece of art” – claims to be the first voice-activated artificial intelligence steering-wheel and, Jaguar says, would carry out hundreds of tasks. It was named for one of the most revered designers of Jaguar’s past, Malcolm Sayer, who worked for the British automaker from 1951 to 1970.

LEARN TO SHARE

“Sayer could signal your membership of our on-demand service club,” JLR told The Corner, “which will offer either sole ownership or sharing of a car with others in your community.

“Imagine a future of autonomous but connected electric cars which you don’t own but instead call when and where you need one. It’s a vision Jaguar Land Rover is exploring – a connected steering-wheel that could be the only part of the car you own.”

For instance, JLR explained, a user might need to be at a meeting a two-hour drive from home by 8am the next day. The Sayer would be tasked, from the comfort of the user’s lounge, to work out when a car should arrive autonomously at the house and even to suggest which parts of the journey the user might enjoy driving manually.
